Artist statement: This portrait is a celebration of PFAW founder Norman Lear, whose lifetime of work as a writer, producer, activist, and creator of many beloved and socially minded TV shows such as “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” has profoundly impacted me along with millions of others. I met Norman a few times through People For the American Way, and he was charming, intelligent, funny, and extremely motivated to cultivate justice and compassion through his TV shows and his activism. Norman Lear embodied everything I admire as an artist/activist/citizen. I see this image of Norman in his trademark, Fedora, as tipping his hat to democracy and the potential of robust civic participation to shape a more just America. The American flag, with different identities and concepts within each star, represents Norman’s big tent approach to the “American Way,” as he always wanted to broaden the coalition for progress.
