Our RESCUE bag promotes two types of rescue: that of people and of pets. This tote is handmade by members of a fair trade cooperative in Kolkata, India that rescues women from trafficking situations, provides them a safe place to live, and teaches them to sew. These women, most the victims of human trafficking, are trained and paid a fair wage as well as given both health insurance and a pension plan. For many, it's the first time in their lives they have lived a safe, secure life.
This tote bag is produced using certified organic cotton, a deep black signifying the dark times the women and the homeless pets that this bag assists once faced. The globe and paw image is hand silkscreened by the women on the bag in vibrant blue to symbolize the sunny times ahead.
The tote is lined with the colorful fabric used to make the Sari, the Indian draping garment that women wear with grace and beauty. Each bag has a different type of interior fabric so no two bags are alike!
