Edwardian Ruby North-South Ring

GBP 1100.00
Product description
A stunning and somewhat unusual antique cluster ring dating from the early 20th century, circa 1910. The three principal stones - a vivid red flame-fusion ruby centre and two pink rubies to either side - are arranged north-south along the head, with pairs of rose cut diamonds in between. It's crafted in 18 carat gold throughout with elegant scrolled shoulders and millegrain bezel settings.
Synthetic, or lab grown, gemstones were were first created during the late 19th century, the technique for producing sapphire and ruby in the laboratory having been perfected by Auguste Verneuil a few decades earlier. Such stones - known as 'flame fusion' ruby/sapphire- caused something of a sensation when they became available to the public around 1905. Their chemical composition is identical to naturally occurring counterparts (corundum, to use the correct mineralogical term for rubies and sapphires), but these stones were created by humans in a laboratory - humans who had recreated the extreme heat and pressure within the Earth's crust to produce some of nature's most mesmerising and coveted treasures.
