Using the Templates and Rulers is not compulsory for making this quilt. The pattern includes instructions for both cutting methods.

If making the Hidden Message traditional on-point block layout (this is the version that does not make the scissors visible), then I also recommend either:

Small Diagonal Set Triangle Rule or

'No Flip' Diagonal Set Triangle Ruler

You can use both these rulers together to cut down on strip measuring and flipping of the ruler.
